The church of All Saints (at All Saints' cemetery)

The church of All Saints

This massive church was built in the 1870-s with the help of the means of Serpukhov's city society. The plan of All Saints' church was carried out by architect Kazimir Vikentievich Grinevsky (1825-1885), who worked out many plans of churchs in Moscow district.

Besides the main All Saints' altar there were altars in the name of Mother of the God "The Levy of the deceased" and St. Nikita. The church is built in the forms, imitating ancient Russian architecture that was popular at that time. Some of architectural forms have the resemblance with Moscow church of Christ the Saviour — the tropeic completions of window aprons, kokoshniks. A high bell tower is very similar with nonpersistent bell tower of Moscow church in the name of Kosma and Damian in Stoleshniki. Before closing in the 1920-s the church of All Saints was lead by archpriest Vasiliy Studitsyn who was canonized with Russian new-martyrs. By old residents' recollections archdeacon Maksim Mikhailov, the famous bass singer, an artist of the Bolshoy theatre in Moscow, was invited on holidays.

As the most of Serpukhov's churches, the church was closed and used as a storage room. During this time the upper part of the bell tower was destroyed and a cumbrous antenna was put on it, the five-dome was destroyed, the church and the cemetery were falling into neglect. In 1995 the church was opened again. The church in the name of St Ioann Kronshtadtsky was built in the basement.

The church of All Saints of Serpukhov. Beginning of XX century

The correspondence about the appearance of this church retained in the archive matter of Moscow ecclesiastical consistory. The petition of the city's head honourable citizen Nikolay Nikolaevich Chernov, honourable citizens Ivan Nikolaevich Konshin, Vasiliy Afanasievich Karpov says that according to the plan of Serpukhov, over city's line there is a city cemetery at public acres, where the burials of the city's deceased are held. But there is no church where the services of the deceased can be held. And the town's citizens ask the permission for building of a stone church with the help of their own means and the means of some benefactors.

The beginning to the donations was made by an honourable citizen, the merchant of the first guild Nikolay Maksimovich Koshnin, who gave 10 thousand rubles for the church's building. The citizens of the town promised to gather the necessary sum. The permission was viewed by Moscow ecclesiastical consistory. Serpukhov's archpriest Aleksiy Levitsky examined the place of church's building and took the work under his own control.

On 11 September 1858 Ivan Nikolaevich Konshin received a decree about the permission of building. The examination of the plan lasted for 4 years. The gathering of necessary means began. The parents of merchant's son Stephan Afanasievich Karpov endowed with 6 thousand rubles. Besides, Afanasiy Gavriilovich Karpov ordered three icons for the church — the icon of All Saints, the Blessed Virgin's "The levy of the deceased" and martyr Nikita. But there were frictions among those who were responsible for building. Konshin and Karpov refused to take part in the works together with Chernov, motivating this by fact that Nikolay Nikolaevich Chernov began the building of the church without architect's supervision, without agreement with the people who were elected by society and even without preliminary discussions of the place of building. Having examined Koshnin's complaint, city's society meeting provided: as Koshnin and Karpov are always outside with trade matters, Serikov Dmitry Ivanovich should be elected to help Chernov.

Church's building lasted for 12 years. The church was built but the means were not enough to build the bell tower.

On 19 June 1875 a new generation of Serpukhov dwellers: priest of the church Nikolay Orlov, churchwarden merchant's son Ignaty Fedorovich Karpov, Ivan Nikolaevich Chernov, Iakov Iakovleevich Bobrov and Aleksey Ivanovich Kulakov tributed an application for the permission to finish the building of the bell tower. There was written in the application that the church was started in 1858, finished and consecrated in 1870, the bell tower wasn't finished because of the lack of the means, and the city dwellers wanted to finish the bell tower, for this sake they were elected as the curators of the cemetery church. On 23 December 1875 archpriest Aleksiy Levitsky reported to the ecclesiastical consistory that the laying of the bell tower is lead to the 3d storey, where the bells should be situated.
